BOOK THIS WORKSHOP

Whitework Workshop

Copyright © Threads 2023
At the time of booking choose to work either the Fairy (Schwalm pulled  & drawn thread work - top picture) or the Climbing Hydrangea (bottom picture - Mountmellick). Schwalm embroidery originates in Germany in a region along the Schwalm River. It is characterised by a coral knot stitch and chain stitch outline.  The shapes are then filled in using pulled and/or drawn thread work stitches. Mountmellick whitework is characterised by plants and flora and is typically worked on cotton sateen fabric with matt white cotton of differing thicknesses. This particular design by Cathy measures approximately 7.5" x 5" and is of a climbing hydrangea, using typical stitches such as padded satin, coral knot and Mountmellick stitch. Whichever embroidery you choose to do on the day, please practise coral knot stitch beforehand! You'll have the respective video tutorial to refer to after the workshop as usual, as there will not be time during the day to cover absolutely everything! The Schwalm Fairy is worked in a 10" embroidery hoop and the Mountmellick in an 8" hoop.

Suitability - Intermediate Plus
No experience of whitework is needed, just some embroidery experience. You should be able to work coral knot stitch without instruction.

About the Workshop
For the Mountmellick, the design is pre-printed onto the fabric for you. For the Schwalm Fairy, you will be shown the tissue paper method of transferring the design.  For both techniques, we will start outlining with coral knot stitch.  Please note that there will not be time to practise or complete ALL the stitches and techniques  required during the day. A link to the relevant video tutorial will be e-mailed to you after the workshop in order for you to be able to complete the embroidery at home.
