Snail Trail
Worked on silk dupion, this piece is an introduction to Goldwork, incorporating gold twist, Japanese gold and bright check, with complementary embroidery stitches in variegated silk thread.  The embroidery itself measures c.15cm x 16cm  at the widest points and may be worked on a 15" slate frame or an 8" embroidery hoop.  The embroidery features a range of stitches including padded satin, feather stitch, fly stitch, woven wheels and stem stitch.

Suitability - Intermediate Plus
This project is not suitable for beginners and prior experience of embroidery is assumed. As a guide you should be able to work stem stitch, split back stitch,  and feather stitch without instruction, with some experience and understanding of couching down threads.  You do not need to have experience of Goldwork.

Preparation required for the Workshop
The complete kit* will be sent to you prior to the workshop, along with access to Part 1 of the video tutorial. This is in order for you to prepare your frame or hoop with the fabric taut and ready to start (if you are using a frame, this will require completion of locking stitches).  In addition you should familiarise yourself with all of the materials and should watch Part 1 of the tutorial prior to the workshop (c. 45 minutes). You may also wish to obtain additional equipment/tools beforehand to assist with the project.  Optionally, if you wish to sample the Japanese work during the workshop, you will also need to apply your felt beforehand.

A magnifier with light is normally essential for Japanese work.
Goldwork scissors will be useful, but there will be some for you to borrow during the workshop.

(Everything else is provided, including needles & embroidery scissors. However you are welcome to bring your own sewing kit if you prefer).

About the Workshop
The workshop is limited to 14 persons. The design will be pre-printed onto your silk.  During the workshop itself, we will concentrate on the goldwork techniques, including application of gold twist and bright check. A live demonstration of the application of Japanese thread will be given and there will be an opportunity for you to sample this, if you have applied your felt before the workshop.   A link to the full video tutorial will be e-mailed to you after the workshop in order for you to be able to complete the embroidery at home.
